Marco Catellani
“Catellani’s painting does not wish to rid itself of tradition, or namely, of that which has to do with the symbolic; in the same way the repetitiveness of the figures is never reduced to evidence, but becomes the sign of a complex rationality that reorganizes things, subjects, bodies and they features”
by Vittorio Sgarbi
Marco Catellani was born in 1951 in Cavriago (Reggio Emilia). He graduated from the Istituto d'Arte "G. Chierici" of Reggio Emilia, ceramics department, where he followed courses by Vivaldo Fornaciari, Giannino Tamagnini and Gigi Ferretti. His interest subsequently shifted to painting, which he practiced in parallel to his professional activity, he has participated in personal and group exhibitions. From 2006 he has devoted his time exclusively to his artistic enterprise. His lengthy research path follows from classical themes, like still life, landscapes, portraits, to experiences with German Expressionism and with historical avant-gardes, to incursions into the field of abstraction and finally alighting onto Pop Art. And here is where his contemporary artistic course unfolds, it is characterised by a double black line that encloses perpendicular slashes and gives body to stylised figures that make his work immediately recognisable.
